COMUNICATO STAMPA → Le fantasie di Mario Mafai a cura di Giulia Mafai e Marina Gargiulo. La Pinacoteca di Brera aggiunge oggi un contributo scientifico fondamentale alle Fantasie di Mario Mafai. Grazie alla generosità di Aldo Bassetti, Presidente onorario degli Amici di Brera, nel 2018 il Museo riceve in dono 22 esemplari di quell’importante serie di dipinti, realizzati da Mafai in anni di guerra e persecuzioni razziali, allestiti finalmente in sala nel Febbraio di quest’anno. Dopo l’arrivo della Fantasia n. 23, donata in Marzo da Francesco Pirelli, e il lancio di contenuti multimediali dedicati (“Brera Stories” e “Brera Plus”), si giunge ora alla pubblicazione del Catalogo, studio imprescindibile per aggiornare la non abbondante bibliografia specifica e atto doveroso nei confronti del donatore, concepito e fortemente voluto dalla figlia di Mario Mafai, Giulia, purtroppo scomparsa poco prima dell’uscita del volume. Dipinte a tinte forti, espressioniste, matericamente costruite con pennellate rapide e energiche, le Fantasie danno vita a un mondo allucinato e fantasioso, un universo di immagini violente e paradossali, popolato di figure sostanzialmente deprivate della loro umanità, trasformate in personificazioni grottesche del dominio militare, oppure vittime di torture e crudeli mutilazioni fisiche, che testimoniano il terrore vissuto nel momento peggiore del Regime, di cui denunciano le assurdità e la cieca crudeltà. Oltre a contributi scientifici di James Bradburne, Demetrio Paparoni, Giulia Mafai e Marina Gargiulo, il volume, edito da Marsilio, ripubblica un saggio di Giuseppe Appella, già contenuto nel Catalogo delle Fantasie del 1989, assieme al “Carteggio Einaudi-Mafai-Pirelli”, con la corrispondenza fra l’Artista e Giovanni Pirelli, che nel 1954 acquista la serie principale delle Fantasie (24 dipinti) e ne progetta la pubblicazione. Il libro contiene anche immagini di altre Fantasie conservate presso Collezioni pubbliche (Firenze, Museo del Novecento) e private italiane. A cura di Giulia Mafai figurano inoltre in Catalogo un dettagliato commento ai Diari di Mario Mafai e un’ampia Biografia. Alla presentazione interverranno James Bradburne Direttore della Pinacoteca di Brera, Ariel Mafai figlia di Giulia Mafai, Emanuela Bassetti, Presidente di Marsilio Arte, Demetrio Paparoni Critico d’Arte e Saggista e Marina Gargiulo Curatrice del volume e responsabile delle Opere del XX Secolo della Pinacoteca.
